| | The History of Bremen According to the text on the picture Bremen was founded by fishermen who called this location BRIMUN.
The city's history goes back to the year 800 when it was an early centre of the Christian missions to North and Northeast Europe. The city became the seat of a bishopric in 787. In 965 Bremen was granted market rights by Emperor Otto I and Archbishop Adaldag. From that time trade increased over the Weser river to the Northsea and beyond. The city always stayed independent, symbolized by the Gothic statue of Roland erected in 1404. In 1646 the city attained "Reichsunmittelbarkeit" status, making it subject to none but the Emperor, and in 1806 it became a Free Hanseatic City. |
