Giza pyramids are located some 11 kilometres from central Cairo. If you fly into Cairo, I recommend to ask for a seat on the port (left) side of the aircraft, as the approaching path to Cairo Int’l requires flights to turn around the pyramids over that side.
There’s so much said about these millenary landmarks, so nothing I could say would be of some new interest, so I will better write some subjective impressions along with practical information.
I had spent most of my life seeing the pyramids on pictures, movies, books, CD covers, etc., so when I saw them for the first time through the A-340’s window at night, I was mesmerised and highly excited. I’d just saw sunset flying over the Greek islands, and that was the second magnificent sight of the day.
Later, when I reached to the site itself, I was very impressed, but maybe not as amazed as I had expected. Maybe the bad quality of the light that day played some part in that lack of astonishment, but when 2 weeks later I came back to the place, in a bright and first-quality sunlight, I felt myself beyond amazement.
I had had time to think about the pictures I wanted to make, and also about the procedures to follow when pestered by the myriad of vendors and other hustlers, so my second visit was far better, although we were equally pestered on site. But we knew what to do, and what not to do, so we simply avoided the people we had to avoid, and accepted the hospitality from Egyptian families who go picnic there (I enjoyed a fresh, crispy lettuce leaf at the foot of the Great Pyramid, which was friendly offered to me by a large family).
Picture taken with Nikon F4s, 20 mm. Nikkor, f.8-11, 1/60 sec., POL filter, Kodak Ektachrome EPP 100 Professional slide film.
- Pros:See one of the Seven Wonders of the World
- Cons:Suffer One of the Seven Worst Pesterings on Earth
- In a nutshell:Not to be missed, anyway. Arrive early!
