Gateway for Alto Vilches | Autumn colors in Alto Vilches range |
While San Clemente is a backwater in the heartland 32 kilometres east from Talca, and has a nice and interesting Traditions' Week, its main interest -for me at least- is because it is the gateway for Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay (also known as Alto Vilches), one of the most beautiful nature reserves in central Chile to see autumn colors, and to use as a platform to climb several nearby peaks. So, this chapter is actually about Altos de Lircay rather than San Clemente, since this is the closest town to the park. The Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay is 76 kilometres east of Talca, and 44 from San Clemente, easily accessible by dirt road after the latter town.
