Welcome to Antwerp

by diamonddog - last update: Feb 18, 2005

Welcome to the "Metropolis" or "Sinjorenstad

View from the leftbank
Welcome to my hometown.

Stroll around the medieval city centre with his narrow cobblestone streets and medieval architecture and sublime museums full of history.
Antwerp has always been connected with the sea through the river "Scheldt" which has given the city this overwhelming flair and grace. Thanks to this waterway Antwerp has become the second-largest port in Europe (after Rotterdam), and the fourth largest harbour in the world.
Attractions like the "Cutty Sark Tall Ships" race or a guided boat tour in the docks are for sure worthwile.

Sunset on the harbour
Visit to the Zoo of Antwerp (one of the oldest in Europe and famous for his variety of species and sorts.
Enjoy the more then 400 kind of Belgian beers in cosy brown pubs or cafes. A huge variety of international cuisine or try the local Belgian dishes like Belgian fries (don't call them French fries), and steamed mussels in the late summer season.
The Summer festivals along the quays and special attractions like the "Night of the museums" and a wide variety of performances .
Fashion & Clothes, trendy shops from famous designers like Dries van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Marina Yee en Ann Demeulemeester
It's all here

Diamonds are a girls best friends

Antwerp, diamond capital of the world. If diamonds really are a girl's best friend, than a lot of ladies will not leave out a visit to the diamond district around the Railway Station. This area is also the Jewish part of the city. The presence of many Jewish people gives the city a flair that cannot be found in other Belgian cities.

Thanks for the useful pub-crawl expressions in the Antwerp dialect! -- I see you have signed up for EuroMeet 2008 in Karlsruhe, so I look forward to meeting you there.

Antwerp! I visited 25 years ago; it is time I refresh my souvenirs, go back to the churches and see the master paintings, also for the beer, of course! The graffiti are stunning, I like that sort of "spontaneous" art. Nice page.
