A la recherche du temps perdu

by Irato - last update: May 31, 2008

My last trip to Paris took place in few months ago, the first 17 years ago.
The the beginning of January 1991. A friend of mine and me got our first permanent passports. Happy and excited that the world was open for us finally, we decided to visit Paris as soon as possible. Although things in Poland changed, the world didn’t change opinion about us. It took two months to get French and German visa. We spent this time in the long lines before the embassies, booking places in the international couch (we couldn’t go by plane – no visa – no tickets), reading books about Paris and falling into depression - nightmare.
We got the visas few hours before our departure and needed next 30 hours to reach Paris. We were too tired to sleep or to talk so we killed the time playing dice. Finally the bus stopped.
It was cold, gray and rainy morning. I took my backpack and found myself in the middle of the Place de la Concorde. Without thinking I went to the Luxor obelisk. I spent here few minutes and my friend asked me if I was OK. And I said I was fine. Just I would like to see Luxor!
She was shocked. We were first time in Paris, had a great view on the Eiffel Tower, short walk to Musée du Louvre or to Madeleine and I was talking about Luxor! But I wanted to talk about Luxor and other corners of the world. So we found some small café and I could dream about my future travels for a while. That was the beginning of Paris adventure.
I’ve been to Egypt since then and many of the places we were talking about that day.
I’ve been to Paris many times since then too. And enjoyed all my visits here. But always, no matter if it is a sunny summer day or middle of the night, I go to Place de la Concorde first. And somehow, once again, it is my very first rainy morning here. I have the same dreams. And I would like to see Luxor.
That’s the most precious thing I can find in Paris – my own past time.

More pictures I put in the travelogues.

Aah Paris, the seductive enchantress has captured my heart & keep trying to entice back & yes, I'm a willing victim. What an excellent page & tips Alina. Can't wait for the day I can eventually return with my family.

This is such a great page. I've been to Paris in 99 and would love to go back. Being from Romania I understand the feelings on your intro page perfectly.
