To quote Wikipedia: "Toledo was originally a Roman Empire outpost under the name Toletum. It later served as the capital city of Visigothic Spain, beginning with Liuvigild (Leovigild), and was the capital until the Moors conquered Iberia in the 8th century. Under the Kalphite of Cordoba, Toledo enjoyed a golden age. Under Arab rule, Toledo was called Tolah itolah (Arabic ØáíØáÉ, academically transliterated Ṭulayṭulah).

On May 25, 1085 Alfonso VI of Castile took Toledo and established direct personal control over the Moorish city from which he had been exacting tribute. This was the first concrete step taken by the combined kingdom of Leon-Castile in the Reconquista by Christian forces."

Our trip to Toledo

In the fall of 1976, I traveled with 4 University of Dallas students to Spain and Portugal. One day, we left Madrid in the dark of night and headed down to Aranjuez. There we changed trains at the ungodly hour of 4 or so in the morning, and took a local train to Toledo.

In 1976, Toledo was still very much a small town. On Saturday evening, everyone went down to the main square and walked in a circle around the "square" (well, "plaza"). Both the spectators in the cafes who were watching the promenading throng and the people walking around the plaza were part of a centuries-old tradition in Latin countries.

This is a facet of Mediterranean life that is disappearing...sad to say...

Nice photos from your visit in 1976. Ten years earlier I spent Christmas Eve in Toledo and got totally lost in the narrow streets, but it was great because groups of students were walking around in black capes strumming & singing Spanish Christmas songs.

I could see that changing trains at 4am would make "hard to get to". The buildings are quite majestic.
