Byzantium in Ravenna | Frieze in Sant'Apollinare Nuovo |
Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th and 6th centuries A.D. Because of this late date (Rome itself fell for good in the late 5th century A.D.), and because the Western Roman Empire was reconquered by the Eastern (Greek) Roman Empire in the 6th century, there is a great deal more Greek influence here in Ravenna than there is in most parts of Italy.
Everywhere in Ravenna you find a part of Roman history that is unknown to most tourists... |

Juliana | VeronicaG Fri May 23, 2008 23:43 UTC Hmm, Theodoric WAS pretty great! I enjoyed your visit to Ravenna. I see you visited Pompeii also. Enjoy this Memorial weekend and take care.... | Nemorino Sat Apr 19, 2008 09:58 UTC I've just had a look at the Ravenna city website, and it sounds like the free bicycle service is back in operation. But it's very limited; as in Verona you have to return the bike by 6:30 p.m. (I see you've been to Cremona but haven't made a page yet.) |
