"Where did the name Horseheads come from?" Horseheads by heplion

Well, I was here on business and can't say that I saw much of the city, but I did ask somebody how the name came to be and here was the answer...

During the Civil war (maybe it was the Revolutionary war?) one of the regements got stuck here in the middle of the winter and had to camp the winter out. They were low on rations and the horses were starving so the general had all the horses shot. Several years later when people settled here they found a pile of horse skulls from killed horses, and thus the name, Horseheads, NY...
