An Ancient City That Still Understands Hospitality

by heplion - last update: Dec 20, 2002

Bukhara is a fantastic jem of a city located in the center of Uzbekistan. What the city lacks in modern conveniences it certainly makes up for in hospitatlity, atmosphere and architecture. I am not sure how everyone knew I was an English speaker by looks, but just walking down the street people would shout at me "Hello Mister!!" Usually younger children. They would all be very excited when I would reply back "A salo Malicom", Uzbek for "hello" Another good word to be familiear with is "Rahkmat" which means "thank you" My wife and I asked directions at one point and were asked about a half hour later by completely different people f we had found the place we were looking for, so if you happen to come in the off season, and are anything but French (lots of french tourists seem to come here) you will be noticed and your presense will spread by word of mouth! WE accidently stumbled into a wedding celebration here, and were promptly assured in and asked to enjoy the meal with them. We stayed for a little while and enjoyed the festivities. The only thing I would recommend...DON'T come in the winter...it is almsot brutal cold and many of the hotels aren't prepared with heated rooms in the winter, nor with hot water...but certainly give it a try in spring or autumn!!!
