Not quite the "Queen of the Danube" you expected?

Sorry if you ended up here expecting yet another of those classic views of the city!

But this is the way I myself see Budapest from my window every day when I am back home, and I put this picture here for my friends who might prefer the personal perspective.
A typical suburban housing estate, much like many others built in the bygone era - with probably a bit more greenery than most. Not exactly the most beautiful postcard shot of the city, I know.

But who cares?

This is as much (or more) the real Budapest as the views along the Danube, the Castle Hill, or the Chain Bridge lit up at night. Like in other Central and Eastern European cities (or even wealthy Singapore, for that matter), a large percentage of the locals live in such suburbs.

I also grew up here, and still find it a convenient, familiar, even fairly "clean-and-green" place to be based at, away from the busy centre where traffic jams, smog-ridden streets, and a general overdose of asphalt and concrete are as much a reality as the World Heritage panorama.
To be honest, in the past decade I have spent more time away from Budapest than staying at home anyway.
And even when back home, I don't go around sightseeing or taking pictures.

So if you ended up here by mistake and want to see the city the way tourists see it and find info to help you plan a trip, I suggest that you check out either the official tourism websites like Budapest Info, Vendégváró Budapest, or of course VT's Budapest Travel Guide, which has several extensive pages devoted to the city, starting with that of my friend MedioLatino. I also recommend that you approach him, rather than me, with questions about accomodation, transport, etc.

And get back to me when you need information about Indonesia or Melanesia! :-)

Oh yes, I understand what you meant for Darmstadt :-) But :-) You could write the off-path page or backstreet page :-)) I like backstreets and the gems they reveal :-))
