| Misty morning at the Tengger Caldera |
East Java is just across the straits from Bali, yet feels a world apart from its touristy neighbour. Though many vistors pause at spectacular Mount Bromo on their way between Yogyakarta and Bali, very few explore the other attractions of this province. And the attractions are certainly there!
East Java's capital, Surabaya is Indonesia's second largest city. Those who enjoy big city attractions like shopping or nightlife will find it second only to Jakarta. History buffs will find its colonial architecture interesting. More colonial architecture is to be found in the town of Malang, which is a quieter, cooler alternative to Surabaya, just 2 hours away. There are also many ancient temple ruins around Malang, Blitar, Pare and elsewhere, and while they may not be as grand as the temples of Central Java and Yogyakarta, they compensate with their atmospheric, unspoilt surroundings. Near Mojokerto, at Trowulan are the ruins of the ancient capital of the great Majapahit empire. When it comes to volcanos, East Java's Bromo at the bottom of the huge Tengger Caldera is easily the most popular in Java, while Gunung Semeru smoking behind it is the island's highest. Ijen in the far east has a fantastic sulphurous crater lake, while reaching Gunung Argopuro takes one through the pristine highland meadows of Yang Plateau. Gunung Arjuno and Welirang are easily accessible from the provincial capital, Surabaya, or from Malang. Those interested in wildlife will find several of Indonesia's best national parks here. Meru Beitiri was (is?) the last home of the Javan Tiger, and still has the best rainforests on the island. In the two corners of the province, the Baluran and Alas Purwo National Parks offer easier wildlife viewing. Off the coast, East Java has several islands to explore. The large island of Madura is famous for its bull races, while the smaller islands of Kangean, Bawean and Masalembo remain way off the beaten track. Finally, when it comes to traditional Javanese culture, I found it far better preserved and more authentic in the villages of East Java than in touristy "cultural capitals" like Yogyakarta. In addition to the typical Javanese culture, the distinct traditional cultures of the Madurese, the Osing and the Tenggerese ethnic groups are all well-preserved and fascinating. To top it all, I found the people of East Java to be Java's friendliest!
Now, do I still need to say more to recommend this province? ;-)
Actually, when I had to choose a place to stay in Indonesia for a longer term from mid-2007, I've chosen East Java. Not that I'm planning to spend much of my time here, but it also makes a convenient base for trips further east! |

geoinmt Thu Dec 22, 2005 22:08 UTC Lazlo, Thanks for pointing me toward your great website on Indonesia. What way would you reccommend to travel to East Java from Jakarta. If there is one place that you would stay to see the temples and volcanos what would it be? | ronaldbarr Sun May 8, 2005 08:44 UTC This is a unique moment you have captured. Well done. Greetings from Ireland. ronaldbarr | NEILHALLIDYA Sun May 8, 2005 08:43 UTC Stunning opening photo. | gabyne Sat Apr 16, 2005 23:55 UTC Laszlo, the picture of the Tengger Caldera is absolutely fantastic.
