| Smoking Karakatau is a highlight of Lampung |
The province of Lampung occupies the southernmost end of Sumatra, just across the Sunda Straits from Java. It is the gateway to Sumatra for those travelling overland from Jakarta, and the Javanese influence is very strong here - in fact about 90% of Lampung's population are transmigrants from overcrowded Java! Fortunately the native Lampungese are still there, too - and they maintain their traditions, notably weaving.
Most travellers bus right through the province, but there are tempting diversions from the Trans-Sumatran Highway. Easily the most famous attraction of Lampung is the Krakatau volcano, smoking in the Sunda Straits separating Java and Sumatra. While most visitors reach it from Carita in Java, Krakatau actually belongs to Lampung, and is cheapest to visit from the small town of Kalianda there. The provincial capital, Bandarlampung holds little of interest, but is an important transport junction and a good place to shop for Lampung's distinctive "tapis" weavings and "ship-clothes". East of here, Way Kambas National Park is famous for its elephant training centre, but keen naturalists will appreciate its wild fauna more. Over in the province's south-western corner, more remote Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park has more pristine forests, and is in fact the best place to see wildlife anywhere in Sumatra! Up the west coast, the town of Krui is gaining popularity among surfers, while little Pulau Pisang off the coast is one of Sumatra's finest islands and a stronghold of traditional Lampungese culture.
All these attractions could justify a special trip to Lampung alone - and if you travel through the province anyway, certainly stop to see some of them! |
