Nightlife, as most tourists understand it, is mostly restricted to cities and resort areas.
Of these, places that attract large numbers of tourists or expats have the type of nightlife spots foreigners expect - Kuta in Bali is probably the most famous place for nightlife in the country, but big cities like Jakarta also have a good range.
Elsewhere, discos and karaoke bars cater to Indonesian tastes and clientine, which means local pop music not always well-tolerated by Western ears, and lots of bar-girls.
Out in the rural areas there won't be nightlife on a regular basis, though parties will usually be held at a suitable excuse like a wedding - and anyone will be welcome to join.
