Nestled ashore a pretty bay backing on high mountains, Hienghéne is the Grande Terre's most popular travel destination away from the Noumea region, and for good reason.
Its main claim to fame are the unusually shaped limestone formations guarding the bay's entrance and lining the coastline to the east, but it also has an excellent museum cum cultural centre, a very helpful tourist office, a range of accomodation and lots of scope for further explorations either along the coast or inland.
If you only have the time to visit one place outside Noumea and prefer scenic beauty and culture to beaches, you should definitely head straight here. And even if you do have the time to look further, Hienghéne still makes a good base on a trip along the North-East coast.
While it may get more tourists than elsewhere, it is still a very, very long way from being touristy. |
