The Youth Hostel

Noumea has the only real youth hostel in the entire South Pacific region, and it is probably the very best hostel I have ever stayed at!

For a start, it has a great location on a hill right in the centre of the city, with the balconies of its dormitory providing a view normally preserved for five-star places. The opening picture for my Noumea page, also seen here, was actually taken from our balcony!

It also provides the facilities to match.
Each dorm accomodates only 4 persons in two bunks, and everyone has a huge locker able to hold massive backpacks, and more.
Showers and toilets are shared, but spotless.

In the kitchen, there are separate lockers for each person both in the cooking area and in the huge refrigeration room, this being the only hostel in the region where I didn't have to worry about my food being pilfered by others! Cuttlery is provided for each guest individually.

There are even huge lockers where you can leave whole backpacks for just 200 francs per week.

To top it all, the wardens running it are a mine of information on New Caledonia, able to answer just about any question you might think of.

In short, this is the best budget accomodation in the entire South Pacific, and the perfect base for a trip around New Caledonia.

And the cost?
It was about 15 USD/night!

Noumea has a good selection of hotels providing all modern comforts fussy visitors might possibly demand - at a price. If you decide to splash out and live in style, the best area to look must be along Anse Vata beach.
