I arrived in Milan from Florence by train at about 1030pm on a cold night in February hoping to catch the next train out going towards Varese to stay with friends I haven't seen for over 10 years. Unfortunately, when I got off the train, the ticket that I bought for the onward trip was for a train that leaves from another station, Garibaldi. (Of course I wasn't told that before I left Florence) Tired and hungry and lugging a big carry on and some shopping bags, I found my way to the other side to catch a local train to Garibaldi. As my luck would have it, the last train to Varese had already left at 10pm and the next one wasn't due to leave til 6am. The train station was emptying up fast and I was getting a bit worried but I had one link to the rest of the world...my lifeline, my cellphone! Whew! Thank God for all things hi-tech. Anyway, I called my friend who was patiently waiting to pick me up at the train station close to his house and told him what happened and he told me to stay calm, stay warm, and stay PUT! It took him about an hour to get there but he did come...just as I was beginning to think that my parka wasn't warm enough.
