  • Name of Shop: Chatuchak

Chatuchak is known as a weekend market because that's when ALL the stores in the huge complex are open.

What To Buy: Wood carvings, oriental furniture, statues, thai silk, just almost everything for everybody.

What To Pay: 20baht-25,000 depending on what you're buying.

If you want to shop for Thai stuff without having to deal with the heat at the markets and do it in airconditioned comfort, check out Narai Phand. Their prices are very reasonable and you don't have to guess and haggle with the salespeople. I know that's half the fun of shopping in Bangkok, but sometimes, it just isn't if you have to deal with throngs of people or worse, if you don't know how to bargain.

What To Buy: I picked up some thai silk shirts, a handpainted thai silk robe, some of those comfy triangular pillows, and a friend bought 3 statues for half the price our other friend got it at chatuchak.
Clothes are cheap in Bangkok but what I would really go back for would be oriental pieces for the home...especially one of those smaller versions of a thai teakwood house.

What To Pay: I spent $200 for a lot of good stuff.

Chatuchak Weekend Market: Hand Carved Wood Panels

Lots of stores in Chatuchak sell wood carvings. I wanted 6 of these panels to take home with me to make a low divider but because I didn't know how to haggle and I thought I could get a better price elsewhere, I ended up not getting any. This was one situation where Chatuchak would be cheaper if you've got good bargaining abilities.

    Mitra handworks: Nice Nepalese Stuff

The colors from the different items sold inside the store will attract you even from across the street.

Their handbags aren't the common kind you'll find in most markets and not as cheap either...though still really cheap.

Bing and I each got hand embroidered bags with a floral pattern in woolen thread.

    What To Buy: Embroidered handbags

What To Pay: Less than a thousand baht if you're only buying 1.
