An Introduction To Trieste

<@>--,--`-- .oO0Oo. --'--,--<@>

Amazingly, Trieste is a little unknown location situated in the very heart of Europe. If you like hills, mountains and the sea, then Trieste could be the place for your next holiday. It's population is around 250,000. A place where not many tourists would think to stay. It is liken to Monaco, a fairly rich economical area of Italy. Close to the borders of Slovenia, Croatia, Austria and Germany and easily accessible by rail or car.

The city is steeped in history and culture with a background of technical and professional skills in the ship-building industry. Trieste is the capital of Fruili-Venezia Giulia and a member of the CEI (Central European Initiative). The mentality of the people is due to the influences of such notable people like James Joyce, Sigmund Freud and Umberto Saba who all lived here.

The architecture is a mix of Austrian baroc, Venetian, Roman and Art Nouveau. Reminders of Mitteleuropa left by the Habsburgs strongly permeate Trieste and is called a 'garden town' because of its balance of architecture and green areas. Many are the scents of the sea along the Friuli Venezia Giulia coast from the borders of Slovenia to the mouth of the Tagliamento river.

The scents of the Trieste coastline are strong, with plants growing amongst the rocks of the Carso ridge overhanging the sea, heated by the sun and the wind which carries the foam of the waves to the coastline follow you everywhere in and around the city.
