  • Fondest Memory: While I was staying in Trieste I had the opportunity to meet up with 3 VT members: Sarah (Venusia) - Elise (Primrosehill) and Cristiano (Banjo) - I had already met Cristiano in Trieste and from there we took the train to Venice at a cost of L15,300 return ticket each. We caught the 9am train from the central station in the center of Trieste and the journey took 2 hours with a few stops on the way. Eventually we arrived at the Venezia Santa Lucia terminal where we were greeted by Sarah. We moved on to another platform where we then waited for the arrival of Elise. All said and done, we set off on our short stay to explore the city. From left to right: Elise, Myself, Sarah

  • Fondest Memory: Here is Banjo and myself posing in front of the Basilici di San Marco at the Piazza San Marco.

After a few hours exploring this fascinating ancient city it was agreed that we all go for a traditional pizza at the Al Vecio Canton.pizzeria/restaurant tucked away in the heart of Venice in one of it's many alleyways. There are many establishments to eat from so there was no particular reason why we chose this one. After enjoying a wonderful meal and taking a few minutes to rest and reflect upon our visit and general views about Venice, we decided to head off and explore some more.

  • Fondest Memory: There were once 3 enormous columns, plundered from Constantinople and erected here in 1172. One eventually toppled into the canal and was never seen again. Criminals were executed between the 2 remaining columns right up to the 18th century and because of this history, some Venetians, out of superstition will not walk between them.

St.Theodore, a crocodile-like-dragon, was the patron saint of Venice before St-Mark's relics came to the city in 828. The winged lion Marcus is now the city's symbol, possibly a sculpture from Assyria dating back to 5th century BC.

  • Fondest Memory: Venice is a set of islands connected by bridges. And you will find no cars are allowed in the city so everything that has to be transported is taken by foot or in boats used for building works, commuters, garbage collection, for funerals etc. Walking around and exploring this fascinating city is therefore an absolute delight with no worries of traffic. Down the small alleyways in this ancient city and across the numerous bridges spanning across the canals linking one island to the next, you will discover the charm and impact this place has on you. The weather beaten dwellings rising out of the water. Narrow winding streets and alleyways where neighbours can hold a conversation from across each other and going about their business. This is a very busy and compact city indeed.

  • Fondest Memory: The transport system in Venice has not changed much, the only difference is that there are many motorised boats as well as the traditional rowing types. The famous gondolas are still recognised as the symbol of Venice, and a ride in one is very popular amongst many tourists.

  • Fondest Memory: You will notice, in the city, piles of metal trestles and planks of wood. They are erected as walking platforms during the seasonal high tides which flood many parts of Venice at regular and irregular intervals. Piazza San Marco is flooded before other areas because under it still runs the Canale Botario which was interred when the Basilica Di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale were built. When these platforms are not officially needed they are put to other uses, such as picnic tables for daytrippers and as stalls by unlicenced street vendors.

If you should hear 'air-raid' type sirens, then this means they are warning you that the high tide is expected to reach over 1.10 meters above the average sea level, therefore flooding some parts of Venice.

    Bridges: ~ Rialto Bridge ~

  • Fondest Memory: Venice would not be the same without it's famous Rialto Bridge. A landmark that attracts thousands of tourists because of it's history and architecture. There is always a crowd on there, whether it be tourists or locals alike watching the activity on the Grand Canal from the bridge's balustrades, or just browsing amongst the souveniers. Antonio de Ponte won the commission to rebuild the bridge in stone in 1588.

  • Fondest Memory: The day was rapidly coming to an end and soon it was time to say our goodbyes and head off for home again. We slowly made our way back to the station to catch our respective trains. With heavy hearts we said our goodbyes, boarded our trains and headed out for home taking along with us some wonderful memories of our day together.

Aaaah! The city of our honeymoon! It's always great to read about it and get back the momories :) Next time whenever you visit you must try to get off the beaten path to the islands of Murano, Burano and Lido. Anyway ... travel on!
