Hamburg is located in Northwestern Germany, on the banks of the river Elbe. It is a major harbour and used to be one of the city states part of the Hanseatic League.
Nowadays, Hamburg is still a port and is one of the richest towns in Germany, vying for first place with Munich.
Hamburg is sometimes called "The Venice of the North" because, like indeed Venice and Amsterdam, it is crisscrossed by canals and tributaries of the Elbe.
Quite a few of Hamburg's old buildings are built in reddish bricks, quite similar to what can be seen in many parts of England. The style can sometimes be very massive and compact.
