Tourist Trap: Mr Wu (or any other name) "all you can eat" places
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are a number of places (sorry I can't call them restaurants) in London that advertise a "£10 all you can eat" meal or something similar. Most of them offer oriental food. The idea is to sit you at some table, give you a plate and let you fill it up as many times as you want in a buffet style. So, yes you can eat as much as you want but you will quickly find that the quality of the food is such that you really don't want to keep eating it. All in all, it is not worth the £10 you've paid for.

At Least Do This: If you really end up in one of those places, first go to the buffet and take a little bit of everything so that you can taste everything before going back for more of the dish you like best or dislike least.
Alternative: Go to Wong Kei where the food is cheap and of good quality. Alternatively, go to the nearest pub. Or McDonald's.

    Tourist Trap: Wax horror
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • London - Madame Tussad's and the Planetarium
  • Madame Tussad's and the Planetarium

  • This is where all the tourists go: Madame Tussaud's wax museum. I just don't understand why people would want to pay £17 (ok, £16.95) to see a wax rendition of Kylie Minogue in a kinky position or David Beckham in a kicking one. The fact that in summer it is so busy that you can't see the building because of the tour operator buses doesn't help.

At Least Do This: Have a bottle of water with you for the long queue and don't look at the price of the ticket. A redeeming quality of your ticket is that it also includes an entry to the Planetarium.
Alternative: If it's a rainy day, you absolutely want to see a museum or you've got kids with you who want to have fun, go and see the Egyptain mummies at the British Museum or the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum. Both are free. Another option, still cheaper than Madame Tussaud's and much more fun, is the Transport Museum in Covent Garden.

If it's a sunny day, go to Regent's Park, a 5 minutes walk away, where you can go to the zoo, rent a rowing boat and have fun on the lake or anything else you'd do in a park.

A very informative London page. I'd heard about the Wobbly Bridge but not all the details. Thanks.

Bravo, Bruno. Splendid tips on this lovely city. We agree on almost everything, down to the wax museum. I love the nighttime shot of Tower Bridge. Most people neglect taking pictures after dark , a pity.
