When people think of Tenerife, they think of the big tourist resorts full of drunken Brits. This is true, but only at the Southwest point of the island, the part that sensible people avoid.
Tenerife is an island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, off the coast of Marocco. With its 6 sisters and a number of islets, it forms the Canary Islands. Tenerife is more or less in the middle of the Canaries.
Tenerife is a volcanic island that grew from the sea bed when that region was a volcanic hot spot.. The result is that the island is more like a huge mountain that appears in the middle of the sea. Huge is the word. Mount Teide, which forms most of the island is the highest mountain in Spain, higher than any peak in the Pyrenees, more than 3000 metres above sea level. If you count from the sea bed, it rises more than 7000 metres!
Tenerife also has quite a few little towns that boast a traditional Spanish architecture. You could nearly be on Spanish mainland.
