Things To Do: Bisquine Cancalaise

  • La Cancalaise is one of the best known tall ships of Brittany. She often takes part in tall ship festivals around the region. The bisquine ships were used in the North of Brittany and in Normandy to fish oysters. Their particular rigging enabled them to be extremely maneuverable with a reduced crew. Traditionally, fishing fleets of the Breton and Normand ports would organise racing competitions between those beautiful ships. The last of them disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century. However, in 1987, the town of Cancale decided to build a replica of one of its most famous bisquines, a ship called "La Perle". They did so and so was La Cancalaise born. Seeing this, the town of Granville, in Normandy, that had traditionally been Cancale's fiercest competitor in Bisquine races could not remain without answering this challenge. In 1990, they launched their own reproduction of a bisquine, a white ship logically called "La Grandvillaise". The black and white ships that are now the last two of their type can be seen regularly along the coasts of Brittany.

  • Locronan is a small village on the slopes of the highest mount in Brittany, Menez Hom. It is considered one of the most typical villages in France. It is definitely worth a visit.

Things To Do: Menhir and dolmen

  • Brittany is very famous for its standing stones that date from the Celt period. Monoliths come mainly in two forms. The menhir is literally a standing stone. The dolmen is a stone table (the word dolmen comes from the Breton words for table and stone). The most famous location is Carnac but such monoliths can be seen all over the region.

I lived in Bretagne as a little girl and went back as a "jeune fille au pair". I miss the cidre and wish someone would make it-locally- in the US (near Santa Fe!)!

Good page about Bretagne! I have one, too. The English word for "genêt" is "broom" (I've found it in a dictionary).
