Boats, mermaids and colourful houses

by bzh - last update: Feb 10, 2003

Copenhagen is located at the East of the Eastern most island of Denmark, Zealand. Apart from being as far as possible from the centre of the country, Copenhagen has all the characteritics of a capital city. It is the largest town around, accounting for more than a quarter of the country's population and teems with life. Copenhagen is also a city dedictaed to water, similar to Amsterdam or Hamburg. It is a harbour and as such welcomes a crowd of ships and it is criss-crossed with canals, along which you can find famous monuments and popular bars and restaurants.
Typical narrow street

Organic city

Like most European cities, Copenhagen is very organic. It has grown across the centuries, expanding around narrow streets and the straight line is usually not the quickest way to go from one point to another.

Danish welcome

As everywhere in Denmark, people speak perfect English and are very friendly. They will not hesitate to help lost foreigners or explain to them details of a particular place or custom, such as the antics that await young man about to get married: the guy in a pink dress in the photo was supposed to earn enough beer money by singing. Unfortunately, his performance earned him about enough for a glass of milk because, as everywhere else in Scandinavia, beer is not cheap.
