"Let's go to the beach" Plougonvelin by bzh

Plougonvelin Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 3 photos

Plougonvelin is a small town along the coast, at the entry to the bay of Brest. Located inside its own small bay, Plougonvelin offers some of the most beautiful and protected beaches in the area.

As the beaches are oriented South-Southeast, they get the sun early during the day and keep it quite long into the afternoon, while being wel protected from the main winds.

The sand of the beaches here is very fine, white and shiny thanks to small silvery black mica particules.

Boats, windsurfs and fortress

Plougonvelin is not just a beach. It is also one of the best places around to practice watersports, expecially for beginners to intermediate people. From windsurf to hobbie cats, via sea canoes, the choice is yours.

The village is also home to a small craggy peninsula called Berthaume, on which stands a fortress that used to defend the entry to the bay of Brest. This fortress was built under the orders of Colbert, during the reign of Louis XIV. Colbert understood the benefits of the natural bay at the bottom of which Brest was located. He fortified the whole area and made Brest the main naval base on the Atlantic, which it still is. The fortress at Berthaume was the first line of defense against potential invaders. Its location meant that if you ever wanted to enter the bay uninvited, you needed to take the fortress first.
