Suur Tõll sculpture - Saaremaa

Suur Tõll sculpture

Funny sculpture

This sculpture by the SPA Meri hotel is of one of the Estonian folk heroes - Suur Tõll - baiscally a giant who was a great help to the ancient estonians with his great strength and wisdom. And the sculpture is made by the most famous of estonian artists - Kangro.
Depicting a man and woman coming home from a fishing trip, carrying a boeat, it is a really cute and funny thing.

Directions: By the seaside next to the SPA Meri.

Ostrich farm - Saaremaa

Ostrich farm

Ostriches in Northern Europe

When driving to Saaremaa through Muhu, drop by this place on the road - if you wish to see/eat/buy something exotic, go to the ostrich farm on Muhu island. Besides looking at and feeding the funny 'birds', you can also buy several cool items made from ostrich skin, feathers or egg shells. You can also buy an orstrich egg, which will be more than enough to feed about 10-15 people (been there, done that :)
Although the taste is almost the same as regular chiken eggs, the whole process of drilling the egg open, trying to get the stuff out and so on is worth the 300 estonian kroons you pay for it...

Vilsandi national park

The national park is situated in the western part of the island and covers more than a 100 small islands. It is a definate must for people who are interested in nature, and more particularily - in birds. The national park inhabits more that 100 kinds of sea birds. The park serves as a reservation for the animals and the flora, as well as for birds. There are also several nice windmills and the islands themselves are worth seeing (they are rockislands, which are unique in Estonia).

Directions: On the western coast of the island.

Kuressaare castle - Saaremaa

Kuressaare castle

The capital of the island

The largest town on the island of Saaremaa is called Kuressaare and it is also the so-called capital of the island. There are many great churches and a wonderful castle with a museum inside. This is also the number one place to go if you want to do some clubbing and bar-hopping. There are many nice hotels and restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and quite a few sight-seeing places. On the whole it is a nice town with friendly people, nice parks and a relaxing atmosphare.

Meteor crater

A group of meteor craters in Kaali is definately a place worth visiting. An iron meteor was found in the 1930s, and the scientist estimate that the craters were formed in about 700 B.C. The most amazing of the craters is the Kaali lake - a perfectly round lake with a diameter of 50 m. The place has a really myserious aura to it and the craters are really amazingly interesting and beautiful.

Directions: The craters are located about 18 km. from Kuressaare on the way to Kuivastu.
