Catalonia

by dlandt - last update: Mar 23, 2005

Catalonia is not Barcelona and Barcelona is not Catalonia. Even though Ididn't have much time, I decided to see both. Catalonia isn't that big so you can tool around without using incredible amounts of time. Ironically, it took us longer to do the paperwork for the rental car than it did to drive to Montserrat or from Figueres to Barcelona.

I know a lot depends on your interests and habits, but for many of you, Catalonia is as within your reach as Barcelona. Away from the city and traffic, you can see a different aspect of life in Catalonia, from the smiling bartender who grinned and gave me a cigarette when he helped me with my map, to the serene peace of the mountains, I encourage you to reach beyond the city.
Sarcophagus

Sarcophagus at Montserrat

Catalonia can hold its own against any other European nation out there as far as beauty of man and nature is concerned. They may like a state, but they have spared no effort in modern or historical times to beautify their land. Like most other cultures in the world, they devoted a lot of their time and effort, as well as money, to their religious sites. This common thread of humanity is manifested in Catalonia the same way it is in other places. The sarcophagus here is lies outside the monastery at Montserrat, a place no less regally decorated than the Kremlin or any other veneration.
Pyrenees

Pyrenees

The Pyrenees are also part of Catalonia. Very different from the coast and from the countryside, they offer a distinctly different experience. You can tell how different they are just by the formation of the stone.
