One of the wonders of the modern world

Where Europe meets Asia

Cannon
Russia is a very unique place. Its a special land unto its own which exists in its own mentality . There is something about the Russians and Russia that is always just so BIG. Note here is a cannon that is the largest ever made, yet its never been fired. Russians like big things.

Spirituality

There is a kind of spirituality in Russia that really doesn't exist in many countries I've visited. You look around and you see a lot of poverty, a lot of new wealth, and yet you step into their churches and its all irrelevant. Al the trappings of the modern and pre-modern dissolve in an instant. There is something in the Moscow air that is both introspective and tragic, yet eternal at the same time. I'll philosophize more and get back to you.

Why Moscow?

I went to Moscow for a wedding, and also did some sightseeing. Given that my wife and I were the only non-Russians, with the exception of three Germans, we had a cultural, as well as a sightseeing experience that I can only say I will remember for the rest of my life. While the Russians aren't as large of a cultural leap to make as say the Japanese, they are different, and learning about their tastes and attitudes is a never-ending experience I for one enjoy. I will come right out and say it : I like Russians. In this picture, you see Gypsy singers and dancers about to leads the guests to the dance floor. My recommendation to you, is that you learn 200 or so common Russian words, and also take two hours to learn how to read cyrillic script. Its not that hard, you can even do it on the plane, and you don't have to learn it perfectly, just enough to get around.

This is the "Peter the Great" Monument that was rejected by St. Petersburg and ended up in Moscow.

Heavy accent is a problem, of course, but poor extrapolation skill (narrow mindness) is a part of it. Read my UK page to see what I mean. Great page anyway.
