Two days in Poland

by dlandt - last update: May 27, 2005

Welcome to Poland

Welcome to Poland
We went to Poland because we were flying LOT airlines to Moscow and decided to take a few days in Warsaw along the way home. Although if you value your time, your luggage, and your self-respect, I can't recommend you fly LOT, I can recommend that you stop in Warsaw for a few days. Most people, even Poles, don't seem to think Warsaw has a lot to see or do, and they may be right. But I spent two days in the city, and wish I'd had at least a little more time. As far as I can tell, two more days would have been enough to have seen a a good chunk of the city. As it stands, I saw the highlights and little beyond the highlights
Welcome to the World

Warsaw is just becoming international

At the time of my visit, I think the overwhelming impression that I received from Warsaw, was that it is a city whose internationalization, whose cosmopolitanism, is in its infancy. Almost everyone I encountered was white. Chinese, Mexican, Indian and other international restaurants seemed to be almost absent, even though I went through a fairly large geographical section of the city. Even other European cultures seemed to be fewer and further between than I would have expected. Warsaw remains very Polish, though you can see that this is changing. After many years of being what was basically a provincial capitol of the Russian or Soviet Empires, Warsaw is taking its place as an international capitol like many others. Something gained, something lost, but the inevitable has arrived.

Cons:"There isn't a whole lot of things for a tourist to do"
In A Nutshell:"Warsaw is worth a visit"

I did love the old town even if it was almost new having been rebuilt! I think the Mermaid is visited most because she has become a symbol of this great city!

I wholeheartedly agree with your choice of hotel, but found Warsaw had more to offer than you saw. We had a few hours on a couple of days to sightsee, but and we found a simple Turkish restaurant near the hotel where we ate 3 days in a row.
