Amsterdam really is a great place. To me, and others might disagree, it is best when you get away from their downtown area. The further away I got, the better it seemed to be. I had local advice and it made a lot of difference, but trust me, don't do the tourist thing here, you'll be missing a lot. Some of it is even in these pages.
Despite the weather, I thought March was a good time to visit. There weren't that many tourists, tourist things were cheap, and its possible to relax and get to know people. Believe it or not, you can have more fun in a local braun bar than you can in the places your tour book will send you.
