Potsdam: Where Berlin stores its treasures

by dlandt - last update: Dec 16, 2006

Potsdam: Home of Berlin

Potsdam is not far from Berlin, but is a city unto itself, and is the capital of Land Brandenburg. That said, the city is intimately connected with Berlin, and housed the royal palaces from imperial days. Today, Potsdam retains its royal majesty, having something like 20 palaces within the city as well as a cozy downtown full of charming eateries, drinkeries and otheries along the cobblestone streets.

This isn't going to be the biggest or the best Potsdam page ever written and it will never receive a 5 on VT, but I would like to offer visitors what encouragement I can. I myself visited Potsdam with some non-German but resident friends and spent a grand total of one day in the palaces, parks, and city. I had a good time, but missed taking a picture of the one thing I thought really was cool. Glienicke Bridge, hich you pass on your way into the city. Often depicted in the movies, this is where the Russians and Americans used to exhange captured spies at four int he morning.

An escape from the city

Potsdam has the look and feel of a day's excursion from the city. It is meant to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience where you eat roasted chestnuts and stroll through the gardens and palaces. You go to Potsdam to get away from it all. The windmill pictured here had brotchen of various sorts, but there is beer and various German comfort foods to be had in the vicinity.

Hello Dave. I have been here, too. It was interesting to see the room where all the famous heads of state were sitting.
