Welcome to Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc-Roussillon is a region of France, located inthe southeast. liek most French regions, it doesn't really form a coherent whole, and is comprised of different prefectures which were only recently cobbled together to form a larger unit, primarily for economic planning purpses, not geographical or cultural similarities.

Sprawling across the artifical borders are distinct regional identities, Languedotian being only one. Catalan is common here, and Occitan is not far off. Although you are most definitely inside the secue borders of the Republic of France, this section of the country has a very different history and tradition than Paris or Nantes.

For our trip...

We stayed along the north end of the Pyrenees mountains. This area was primarily rural and small townish. At times, liek you see in this picture, it seemed prosperous and quite livable.

At other times

it seemed quaint and cute, but I could picture problems living here.

These problems were more manifest in theEastern Pyrenees Department's capital city, Perpignan.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Rural, picturesque, and rich in cultures
  • Cons:Not a coherent entity as we think of regions
  • In a nutshell:France but not French

Vauban really got around, even designed a fortress in Villefranche de Conflet! (Also in Belgium and Germany, and of course elsewhere in France. A very nice district of Freiburg is named after him.)

I agree that the signs look a bit like the ones in Wales, first in Welsh and then in smaller letters English! But the Catalan tongue is still widely spoken in this part of France. Even in now Cosmopolitan Perpignan!
