Art Gallery of South Australia: The Art Gallery of South Australia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although technically free, a small donation is requested for the gallery. This is surprising in itself given the number and quality of the works presented. My thanks to the South Australian taxpayer, I guess. The museum has diverse and categorized sections dealing with each era of the local history, as well as Aboriginal, extra-regional, Asian, and European art. You could potentially spend several days here. I would stack this collection up against all but a handful of art museums in Europe and North America. The museum is immaculately cared for, carefully explained, and meticulously presented. Somehow, despite showing many different forms of art, they manage to keep the motif Australian and somewhat regional, keenly keeping my interest.

Barossa Valley: Drive to the Barossa Wine Country
  • Tip Rating:
  • Adelaide Barossa Valley

  • An easy way to do the Barossa Valley is to drive north through North Adelaide and catch the A1 and then the A20. Follow the signs from there. The wineries have maps of the area so use any of them as an information kiosk. Remember, five samples equal a glass, two glasses equal drunken driving in Australia. The drive should take a little more than half an hour, maybe 45 minutes.

Well, I also had the fortune of living in Adelaide for 4 yrs in the early 70's and they may have been some of my happiest! Loved it too in many ways, but felt so far removed!

Thanks for your great Adelaide comments. I fell in love with the place when I visited in 2001. I would compare it to Pasadena in CA (Sydney felt like a big San Diego, Melbourne felt like San Francisco in the core and a bit of LA in the St. Kilda area).

re Hahndorf(near neighbour)...unfortunately,this little town has a Bavarian theme, whereas the early German/Lutheran settlers were from Silesia and Prussia. The bavarian overkill spoils the integrity of the original village.
