For most people, Sydney is where they will enter Australia, and where Australians will depart for the world. In my opinion, its a place where Australia interfaces the rest of the world, and the first impression of Australia for visitors. As such a place, it has traits of both Australia and the world at large. Not to say that this is the only place you can enter or leave Australia, but its the most trafficked. It is what New York is to Americans, London is to Britons, and Amsterdam is to the Dutch. Its large, intelligent, well kept, interracial, multicultural, modern, industrious, cosmopolitan, and busy. Its not really Australian, but you can see Australia in it. |
