I recently moved to Erlangen and would like to share some information with everyone from a foreigners perspective. This year Erlangen is celebrating its' 1000 year anniversary. This has been a great year to learn about this fascinating city.
Actually there is some dispute about the true age of the city Erlangen, but what is certain is that it has a lot of history. The reason for the date of 1000 years is that there is a document currently on display that is dated from 1002 A.D. which mentions the name of Erlangen. You can visit the city's museum and see the actual document. It is currently on loan from a museum in Munich. The only words that I can make out is Erlangen on the fourth line of the document at the start of the line. Most people believe that the city was actually founded closer to the year 1687??? I may be wrong on this date so don't quote me on this!! But this was the time when the Huegonants were fleeing France and crossed this region. They were allowed to stay and created the protestant region in Middle Franconia, here in Erlangen. Almost everywhere else in Bavaria is strictly Catholic
