The major city of the Yucatan peninsula (some 600, 000 people), it is a charming city of narrow, one-way streets, colonnial buildings, city squares and parks. It has few 'grand' highlights - most of its charm is the ambience of the city and its superb location to other sites in the area. But with an international airport, lots of hotels and restaurants to suite all tastes and pockets, its an ideal place to base yourself to sample the delights of the inland Yucatan before (or after) experiencing the Caribbean coast.

It has an interesting history - the Mayan settlement of Tiho was conquered by the Spaniards in 1542 and promptly renamed Merida. The town took its colonnial orders directly from Spain rather than Mexico City, and it is believed that this accounts for Merida's distinct cultural and political identity. This situation remained th case until the War of the Castes in the 1850s, when, in return for help from Mexico City, the town's allegiance was to switch to capital.

Nowadays, it's a grand if fading place, with most of the tourist attractions within the city boundaries to be found in the immediate vicinity of the Plaza Mayor. It being the first Mexican city I'd been to probably accounts for the soft spot I have for Merida.

Ahh, if I wasn't so lazy in December, I'd finally get around to planning a trip to Merida and Uxmal instead of Playa del Carmen! Nice page :-)

I enjoyed your description of Merida. What a fabulous place! I agree with you - the Mexican cemeteries are amazing, not morbid at all!
