Some label Oaxaca as their favourite Mexican city. There is no doubt about it - it has a lot of charm (the main drawback is that its a little too heavy on the traffic away from the pedestrianised Alcala for my tastes, especially in the narrow streets in the older part of town).

Having said that, the location in the mountains is spectacular (with the skies and the colours changing in the late February afternoons), the Santo Domingo Church and attached Museo Regional de Oaxaca are superb, the area around the Chuch leading towards the Zocala and cathedral exude charm, there are great restaurants and bars (treat yourself to a margarita in the Los Novicias Bar of the Camino Real Hotel) and its a great centre for touring some of the sights in the immediate vicinity (Monte Alban and Hierve de Agua, as well as Cuillapan de Guerrez and the unfinished 16th century church/ monastery: Mitla and the Zatopec ruins and any number of local markets in outlying towns and villages virtually every day of the week). It is also a very friendly city - people were very welcoming and our poor Spanish was not a major problem.
