Eminently picturesque silver city built straddling a hill (so be prepared for some muscle stretching in the legs!) with the colonial buildings clinging to the hillside. Narrow, twisting streets ascend (and therefore descend!) the hill (watch out for the legion of VW beetle taxis that crowd the streets), opening out on to little plazas or vantage points to overlook the city and the mountains that surround it. Two-thirds of the way up is the stunning Catedral de Santa Prisca and its baroque rose-coloured facade.

Much of the delight of Taxco is wondering the streets (nipping in to the many many silver shops) but once you have tired of this, wander over to the funicular (or Teleferico) (quite a trek so worth flagging down one of those many VW beetles - the fare is a flat rate anywhere in the city of 15 pesos (Feb 2002 prices). It'll take you up to a different, silent world of two or three cafes/shops and the Montetaxco Resort - a great place to sit and look back down onto the city sipping a beer (or two).

I loved Taxco, one of my favorite places in Mexico. Did you climb up to the Jesus Cristo statue? Lovely view from there as well. Didn't see Grutas though... guess I'll have to go back! Thanks for the info.
