Kazimierz Dolny is regarded as one of the jewels of Southeastern Poland - its idyllic location astride the banks of the Wisla, the scenic location, its architecture and, apparently, 'effervescent light' has long attracted artists, tourists (Polish as well as foreigners) and, sadly, invading forces.

Kazimierz Dolny - Lower Kazimierz - is the town of its namesake, Kazimierz the Great. He changed the sleepy village into the important 14th century mercantile town it became - a trading route of the Wisla timber and grain industry that used the river to transport its goods to the Baltic port of Danzig. It's the merchants homes and the Rynek that have become the major attraction of the town today.

Kazimierz also proclaimed a legal protection throughout Poland for the Jews of Eastern Europe and Kazimierz was a major attraction for settlement. At one stage, more than 80% of the population was Jewish and it was this soul of the town that was destroyed in WWII.

Nowadays its a town established for tourism - plenty of hotels, restaurants, bars etc... There's transport connections via Pulawy to Warsaw and there are direct buses to Lublin.
