Obidos is also known as 'The Wedding City', following the town being one of the wedding presents given by Dom Dinis in 1282 to his bride, Dona Isabel of Aragon. From this it became a traditional weddign present by the Kings of Portugal. Amazingly, back in the 13th century it was quite an important port. But its been moreorless high and dry for 500 years, although the result of the river silting up is that the land around it is incredibly fertile, leaving beautiful countryside immediately outside the town walls. |
| | Not surprisingly, its a bit on the touristy side, with its crenellated fortifications, castle, cobbles streets and alleyways and whitewashed buildings with bright blue and yellow borders. But its still a lovely place to visit, whether for a day trip out of Lisbon or part of a coastal and inland tour. |
| | And, only a few kilometres away is the Laguna da Obidos and the open sea. |
