Even in June/July, the lake can be surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
The village of Dervio climbs the surrounding mountainside from the shoreline.
Varenna is a gorgeous little town approximately halfway up (or down) the east shore. Far enough away from Milan not to be over run by tourism and weekend getaway, but on the ferry run, its a beautiful place witht he town 'running' from shoreline up the hillside - so plenty of atmospheric alley ways, viewpoints etc...
