It's huge! It's noisy, dirty, polluted. But it's like no place you've ever been to before. You'll love it or hate it, its that extreme. Rarely have I heard a middle-of-the road reaction to Cairo.
An incredible 16 million people live here. It has history pouring out of every corner - the Pharoahs, the early Christians, the Moslems, the Crusaders, the the the... It is a city teeming with life - it certainly ain't been prettified for tourism. No fancy boulevards, no huge open plazas providing open views for cameras and digital videos. It's a living city - the old city simply has no room to cater for picture-postcard vistas. And with so many people, every sense is assaulted - the noise, the crowds, the smells, the sights. |
