Known as the city of sails, Auckland could equally be known as the city of islands - the bay is choc-a-bloc with volcanic plugs, some no more than uninhabited rocks, others, like Waiheke, supporting a reasonable population and a thriving wine-making industry.
It is apprarently the fifth largest city in the world in regards to the area the official city covers! And with approx 1.25 million inhabitants, Auckland accounts for approx 30% of New Zealand's population.
