Only 35 minutes by ferry from Auckland, Waiheke Island is a completely different world. Putting it simply - stunningly beautiful.
It supports some 8000 souls and is approx 95kms square. Inhabitants are two kinds - long stay and newcomers. Long stayers are of the alternative, arty lifestyle, pretty laidback, very friendly. There's little love lost between them and the newcomers, who are seen as the rich kids who are buying up land and building hyper-modern homes looking out to sea and who either helicopter in from Auckland or drive their 4X4 from the car ferry terminal without noticing the local community. In a nutshell, they are not contributing to the Waiheke way of life (and at same time pushing prices up). Sadly, its not a unique story.
But fear not - its not exactly open warfare in the lanes of the island-:) Make an effort, and you'll be welcomed.

So many people down-play Waiheke, it's great to come across such a positive view of the place. I haven't done any of the walks - I mostly see Waiheke from the water. Will have to get myself over & have a proper look around. Lovely pics (unsurprisingly!!) | SWFC_Fan Sat Apr 1, 2006 04:57 UTC
