Apollo Bay - Apollo Bay

It's all about location - and Apollo Bay certainly has it!

Some 180kms west of Melbourne on the Great Ocean Rd, the town has developed along a wide, safe beach with a backdrop of the Otway Ranges - from bush to beach in minutes. It has become a real holiday destination, with a wide array of accommodation and associated restaurants, cafes and 'service' shops - from supermarkets and milk bars through to surfer/beach shops, galleries etc. A golf course, horse-riding, fishing and other activities can all be found in Apollo Bay. And it's a great spot for exploring other parts of the Great Ocean Rd and the interior - stunning coastal landscapes, river walks, rainforests, waterfalls - all are close by.

And, thankfully, the growth of Apollo Bay is controlled - unlike its neighbour Lorne 60kms to the east. No ugly seafront apartment developments in AB. No rampant commercialism. Currently, there is one main drag on the GOR itself where shops, cafes etc are to found opposite the parkland leading to the beach. Holiday homes, single storey motels/hotels straggle the GOR predominantly back towards Melbourne for 2kms or so (but mixed in with private homes etc and lying back from the road surrounded by gardens so it does not create a 'motel highway' feel). A small fishing marina is to be found at the far western end of the bay

That's Apollo Bay! That one hour further west from Melbourne has resulted in Lorne becoming the destination for families, groups of young people etc. AB is more laid back, mellow and currently a place to relax. In time it will change, but for now....
