Things To Do: Three Sisters

The single most photographed part of the Blue Mountains - the Three Sisters rock formation on the edge of the main Blue Mountain town of Katoomba. Legend has it that, in Aboriginal culture, the Three Sisters are three sisters turned to stone. The three were thus transformed by a sorcerer to protect them from the interest of three undesirable men. Trouble being that the sorcerer died before he was able to turn them back. You can see the sisters at Echo Point. In addition to the huge viewing platform (facilitates the coach-loads of people who turn up), there is an easy walking track which takes you right up to the first of the sisters. Steep wooden stairs from this 2nd viewing platform (much smaller than the one at Echo Point itself) takes you down the rock-face and across a wooden bridge onto one of the sisters (the wooden steps continue down the rock face to the valley below - a very steep descent).

Another one of the more popular Blue Mountain stopping points is the Falls in the town of Wentworth Falls itself. As with so many access points in the National Park, the Falls act as starting points to a number of walking tracks of various degrees of difficulty. The path for the Falls themselves from the car park is not straightforward - it's nnot difficult but nor is it easy. The path actually crosses the top of the Falls and then works it way down the almost sheer face of the cliff - a very arduous walk to the valley below (although there are a number of stopping points to give you the opportunity to re-evaluate the desicision to walk to the valley floor! :) The Falls drop 300 metres - but sadly on this day, little opportunity to see that far below! :) But nevertheless it was extraordinarily beautiful regardless.

Perched as it is on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the Jamison Valley, Katoomba offers stunning views. The Prince Henry cliff walk is one of the easier walks on offer, which starts at the viewing platform overlooking the Three Sisters and winds itself along the top of the cliff through to Leura Falls and Leura Cascades. There are, of course, much more arduous walks, taking racks down to the valley floor. There's also abseiling, rock cimbing, caving and canyoning for the more adventurous. For the less adventurous, there is also the Scenic Railway and Scenic Skyway which takes you down to the valley floor.

Not as dramatic as many of the other falls in the area, Leura Cascades is nevertheless a cute spot on the edge of the town of Leura with a very easy track walking along the stream (although, like all Blue Mountain NP walks, it becomes progressively harder)

Things To Do: Govett's Leap

Govett's Leap provides fantastic views along the Grose Valley and onto the Blue Mountain's tallest waterfall - Bridal Veil Falls. As with so many vantage points sitting atop the plateau and its many gorges, it is also the starting point of many bushwalks down to the Valley floor below. These walks can be relatively short or involved full day hikes, involving as the longer ones do, a 300 metre descent. Govett's Leap is to be found at the eastern edge of Blackheath, a town 10kms north west of Katoomba (and on the train line). It is one of the most popular spots on the tourist run, with the car park usually full of tour buses. But they move on quickly :)
