Restaurant Name: McArthurs
Nestled in a single-storey 19th century building on the high street, McArthurs is a delight for a fully atmospheric breakfast or lunch.
If the weather is good, try and grab a table in the courtyard overlooking the street, surrounded by established shrubbery (enabling you some privacy and watch people go by without them knowing you're watching them :)). Or, on a winter's day, breakfast (or lunch for that matter) at McArthur's is hard to beat. Two small rooms, both with open log fires, dark woods, wall-papered, one serving as the 2nd hand bookshop - you couldn't get much cosier.
It also serves as a B&B
Favorite Dish: We had breakfast here, sitting in front of the log fire with the winds howling outside. All that was missing (thankfully :)) was the ticking of a grandfather clock. The breakfasts are scrummy, although the cooked breakfasts are limited to eggs & bacon with toast or full brekkie (no 25 variations of egg and/or bread as to be found in Melbourne cafes). But there's also pancakes, muesli, croissants etc, so no problems there. And the coffee is good too. The perfect start to the day (although be warned - the making of coffee and conversation with the owner do not go together. She talks or she makes coffee :) That's fine if you already have the coffee and she's talking with you :) . Its one of those general country Victoria rules - don't be in too much of a rush...
Its also worth remembering that the cafe/bookshop is part of the same building (but different owners I think) as Maldon Bakery (the oldest in town). Its a tiny shop front but serves some of the best breads, pies and pastries around.
