Port Campbell is a small coastal village, dramatically located in an almost perfectly U-shaped bay. But this is no gentle, sandy-beached inlet. This is the Victorian coastline of the Great Ocean Rd. POrt Campbell is pounded by the waves of the Southern Ocean (next stop Antarctica) and the villages forms the sheltered part of a dramatically cliffed bay.
Port Campbell itself is a relatively quiet sleepy place (the Great Ocean Rd now by-passes the village), but can at times be overrun by tourists as it is the closest settlement to the 12 Apostles and Port Campbell National Park.
Thus there are a surpising number of cafes and restaurants per head here (although not that many places to stay) |
| | Sadly, the 'apostle' in the foreground collapsed in 2005! This entire coastline is ever changing - London Bridge really did fall down in 1990 and a sizeable landslip happened in the Bay of Islands in 1997. Three major events but many other changes take place every day along the 'Shipwreck Coast' |
