A common phrase is that the most exciting thing about Haifa is the train back to Tel Aviv. Hardly fair! The third biggest city in Israel, Haifa is a typical port city - sprawling, run down in parts. But it is also spread over many slopes of the Carmel Mountain (reported to be the longest mountain in the world) and has developed a character of its own. Certainly the greenest city in the country - tree-lined boulevards and roads abound. Compared to the scene in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Haifa is lagging behind. But it is a very attractive city (fabulous views to be had over the Bay of Haifa from the main Hanassi Blvd), much more laid back than the two bigger cities, a more integrated Jew/Arab community, easy access to countryside, the best city beaches in the country. |
