Hoan Kiem Lake: Hoan Kiem Lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • Right in the centre of Hanoi is Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Restored Sword). Surrounded on all four sides by busy thoroughfares, it's hardly an oasis of calm! Yet Hanoi citizens flock, by day or night. Built on an island into the lake is Ngoc Son Temple, reached by the red-painted wooden bridge, The Huc (Rising Son) - the focal point for locals and tourists.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and complex
  • Tip Rating:
  • He didn't want it, but the Vietnamese government built it anyway in the early 70s, and now it has become a place of pilgrimage. And yes, there inside is the embalmed body of Uncle Ho himself. The Mausoleum is part of a huge complex, including the Museum, One Pillar Pagoda and more.

The approach (Old City side) is one of reverence - wide open spaces (do not walk on the grass!), guards of honour, flags a-flying and hushed respect once inside.

    Presidential Palace: Presidential Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not open to the public, except through organised tours but forming part of the Ho Chi Minh Museum complex, the Presidential Palace is an excellent example of some of the grand, turn-of-the century colonnial buildings in Hanoi.

Things To Do: Quan Thanh Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not necessarily a highlight of the temples in Hanoi, but certainly worth stopping off at if you heading towards the West Lake and/or Tran Quoc Pagoda from the Ho Chi Minh Complex - it's only a few minutes walk from the Presidential Palace

Shaded by enormous trees, there has been a temple here for nearly one thousand years.

One pillar pagoda: One PIllar Pagoda
  • Tip Rating:
  • Famed as one of the symbols of Hanoi, and part of the Ho Chi Minh complex, the pagoda is a sad copy of the original. Built in 1049, the original was blown up by the French prior to quitting 'Indochine' in the 1950s.

    Churches: St Joseph Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cathedrals are not such a common sight in SEAsia, but neo-Gothic St Joseph's proudly stands in central Hanoi, its square towers dominating its small square and is surrounded by the yellow colonnial buildings of the Diocese of Hanoi. Sundays see the interior full to overflowing as there is a high number of catholics in Hanoi (as you can see in the cathedral parking lot!)

    Opera House: Opera House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another great example of colonnial architecture, the Opera House (built in 1911) overlooks one of the busiest intersections in Hanoi (and that's saying something!).

(I was standing in the middle of the road - so I had to wait for a very quiet moment to take this picture!)

    Walking arround: the streets
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the great pleasures of Hanoi is simply wandering the streets, risking life and limb trying to cross the narrow streets with hundreds of bicycles, motorcycles, occasional vehicle as well as being poisoned by the fumes! It has a certain charm.....:) But you can also find moments of quiet calm.

    Walking arround: Hidden Temples
  • Tip Rating:
  • By walking the streets of the old quarter, you can suddenly come across temples hidden away among the shops and traders.

Things To Do: Tran Quoc Pagoda
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the oldest pagodas in Vietnam, the current buildings dates from the mid 1800s. It sits on the shores of Ho Tay (West Lake) and is certianly one of the most interesting of all the pagodas, incorporating a number of buildings and pavillions, as well as monk's funerary monuments.

    It closes at lunchtimes.
